Cocoa energetic ballsThe cocoa energetic balls, born with the need to replenish forces during races, and the premise of not wanting to spend a lot of money on energy supplements. I decided to look for some home food supplement recipe. And if it also gave me the energy to run better. I started looking for Scott Jurek’s book Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness. And there I found a recipe for energetic balls, which I simply adapted to my ingredients, and tastes.

As in my recipe the main ingredient was cocoa, hence it will be baptized as cocoa energetic balls. Like any recipe that prevails, this also begins with the presentation of the ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Cocoa energetic balls1/2 cup of powdered cocoa, it turned out in the end too, so for future balls, I’ll put less
  • 1/2 cup cashew nuts
  • 8 medium dates
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 or 4 dried tomatoes
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon and a half of coconut oil

Recipe

Cocoa energetic ballsThe first thing is to combine all the ingredients in a food processor, as could be the Thermomix in my case. The times for me in the kitchen are a little approximate, everyone who sees how it is going, and if you need more time, then nothing, you give it. So start, from 3 to 5 minutes at speed 8, until we get a homogeneous mass. That in my case it was like fine earth, a little caked.

Cocoa energetic ballsThe resulting mixture, we pass it to a bowl, or soup plate, where you most like to work. To this mixture of the dish, we add coconut oil. In my case I melted it a little earlier, so that it was more liquid, and I would find it easier to work with it. We mix everything very well until it is perfectly united. We will get a dough that is easy to work, and easily catch the shape you give it.

The Result

Cocoa energetic ballsAlthough the appearance is different, now it will be very easy to get small portions of dough, and give them the shape of a ball about 2 cm. We put these balls on vegetable paper, and put them in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes.

Then I passed them to a tupper to store them and save them for when you need them. 3 Weeks I can assure that they will stand without problem in the fridge. The result was about 20 balls

As a final conclusion, I commented that the balls, I have used it in some race, I do not know if they gave me that extra energy I needed, but they were good. To carry them in the race, I simply wrapped them in silver paper. The only negative I found was that maybe I added too much cocoa. So when you eat them, the sensation in the mouth is that you have to drink something liquid, since if you do not stay like the cocoa stuck on all sides. So I’ll try less cocoa next time

The positive, a new flavor to replenish forces, are homemade, cheap and do not give positive in the race.
